Apple quietly updated Safari for the Mac. I just noticed it today when I clicked on Software Update and saw a new version of Safari available for download.
You can see from the screenshot of Software Update what new features are available. New features include the Smart Search Field and Offline Reading List. What features are not available?
Safari was given new features with the release of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, including the unified Smart Search Field (called the Omnibar in Google Chrome), tab view, iCloud tabs, and sharing.
With the exception of the Smart Search Field, the other new features for Safari are unfortunately for Mountain Lion only. Note that I’m still running OS X 10.7 Lion, so only the Smart Search Field has become available for my Mac.
To update Safari on OS X
- Click the Apple logo on the upper left side of your screen
- Click Software Update
- In the dialogue window that will open, click show details. Make sure the Safari checkbox is selected
- Click the install button on the lower right side of the dialogue box
Feeling left out?
For those of you running OS X 10.7 or older, would you have wanted to get iCloud tabs, sharing, and tab view?

I’m using Snow Leopard and I’ve not any Safari update at the moment! Hope I will have it soon!
I hope you get it, too. I’ve like having the omnibar on Chrome and I’ve got an omnibar plugin installed on Firefox on an old iBook running Leopard. I think a combined address and search bar is a great timesaver and I think you’ll like having the feature on Safari.
