Expect Thinner Keyboards on 15- and 17-inch Macbooks

Apple wants to put laptops with thinner keyboards in your hands. A patent application dug up by Apple Insider points to plans by Apple to make keyboards as thin as .02 mm. These keyboards would be thinner, lighter, and more quiet than keyboards being manufactured today.

The patent says the new keyboards could be made of glass, wood, stone, or, believe it or not, polished meteorite (material that’s, you know, out of this world).

Download Messages Beta for the Macbook (an OS X Mountain Lion preview)

Apple announced OS X Mountain Lion and some of its new features. Among these features is a new Messages app that is much like Messages on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The public beta version of the Messages app can be downloaded now and can be run exclusively on Mac OS X Lion.

iPad 3 Could Be Announced in February 2012

A February intro and a March 2012 release. Such is the rumor picked up by Cnet  from a Japanese Apple blog.

According to the Cnet report, the possible iPad 3 release could have come earlier except that Apple’s factories in China are tied up with the celebration of the Lunar New Year.

Macbook Air, Pro with Ivy Bridge and “Retina” Display Coming Soon

Not only are coming Macbooks expected to get significant performance boosts from CPU and SSD upgrades, higher resolution screens with “Retina” display are also expected to make its debut to Apple notebooks.

Websites such as Macrumors are citing Digitimes as the source of reports that Apple supply chain partners “would double the resolution of the Macbook Pro to 2880×1800 pixels.” Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch have been boasting of Retina displays that “pack four times the number of pixels into the same size screen” as previous models. The rumored iPad 3 could also get a boost to its screen resolution.

Get Ready for a 15-inch Macbook Air with Ivy Bridge

It’s not just updates for the iPhone and the iPad that are getting attention lately. Technology sites have been abuzz with the possible launch of a Macbook Air with a whopping 15-inch screen. New processors with Ivy Bridge processors are also to make an appearance on the next-generation Macbook Air.

Right now, Macbook Air line includes an 11-inch and a 13-inch models; 15-inch screens are only available on Macbook Pros.

As for CPUs, the current Macbook Air’s Sandy Bridge processor from Intel provides great performance while being a great energy saver. But Intel’s Ivy Bridge processor promises to be both faster and smaller than Sandy Bridge. Intel is also touting Ivy Bridge’s graphics and multimedia performance.
